Clears mud well, good traction, cornering and tracking. Not bad in the dry and on harder surfaces.

Dislikes

None as a mud tire

Conclusion

This is the tire by which I judge all other mud tires.

Although I didn't give this tire any ratings higher than "good," that has more to do with the conditions I generally use it in than the tire's performance per se. To date it remains the best front tire I've used for general off-season (read: muddy) riding here in Western Oregon, but there is no tire that handles those conditions really well. Let's face it, mud is slippery stuff. I prefer Mud Mad pressure in the low to mid-30 lb. range over closer to 40 if the mud is really sloppy and thick. If the ground is firm, higher pressure works fine.

Dislikes

None really, although personally I prefer a wider front tire, even in the mud. Drive tires need to be skinny in order to cut through to the traction zone, but on the front I like a tire with more ability to conform to the landscape, yet still with very agressive knobs that clean well. I like the knobs on the Mud Mad Front and it is a very good mud tire in its own right, but I wish its casing and tread were 1/4 to 1/2 inch wider.

Conclusion

I have not yet found a tire that handles mud perfectly (of course that's an impossibility) but for dealing with all sorts of mud the Mud Mad makes year 'round riding in Western Oregon's sloppy rain forests very tolerable. For this reason, I'll give it a "good" overall rating -- in this case mostly in comparison to anything else on the market that I've tried.

On first inspection the knobs seemed too big, but I've found them to be very stable. Much more stable in the corners than a GEAX Blade. Rolls well.

Dislikes

Just okay on wet roots.

Conclusion

This review is based entirely on wet winter muddy riding.

Very reliable tire for the mud. I usually find that a tire pressure of around 35 psi works well in the front for my riding style. Somewhat surprisingly to me, I found that the MudMad performed best at around 50 psi.

Would I buy it again - yes
